Peter MacLean receives
Australia Day honors.
Perth Highland past Pipe Major and Life Member, Peter MacLean, recieved one of Australia's highest accolades on Australia Day, Jan 26, 2007.
Peter (60) was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his work and expertise in cemetery and crematoria administration, both at home and overseas.
As reported in Perth's Community Newspapers: "Funerals have changed from dour occasions to be celebrations of lives in the 30 years Peter MacLean has been in charge of Perth's cemeteries."
Peter joined the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board just as land was being set aside for Pinnaroo Memorial Park at Joondalup. "Cemeteries should not be depressing places visited only for funerals, but have more nice memorial gardens," he said.
Lounges where families could have a cup of tea and sandwiches after a service had been built at most cemeteries; other innovations included webcasting of services for families overseas.
Mr MacLean said: "We have studied progress with technology and what is happening in other parts of the world. "We have endeavoured to reflect the changes in public attitudes." Vice-President of the International Cremation Federation and inaugural chairman of the Australasian/Asian Regional Council, Mr MacLean said it was pleasing to be able to cater for a range of cultural customs.
Peter is an active piper with the Perth Highland Pipe Band. He is also a life member of Clan MacLean and has travelled to the Chieftan's castle on the Isle of Mull in Scotland to take part in highland gatherings of the Clan.
