Recruiting drive is on
The band is in rebuilding mode after a few years of losing members as people move overseas or their careers take them away.
The Committee is working on a number of initiatives to get some new blood into the band, but also working on getting back some old blood back in, too!
If any "lapsed members" on this mailing list are interested in dusting off the instruments, or if you know someone we should contact, we'd love to hear from you. Click HERE.

Practice to move to Mondays
After having held our band practices on Wednesday nights for many years, the band will be changing to a Monday night from April. It's hoped that the new night will accommodate more new members who may wish to join us. Please Note: Commencing from Monday 6th April, practice will be held each Monday night, still with a start time of 7.30pm, and still at the Perry Lakes hockey clubrooms. After the end of March, please don't come on Wednesday - we won't be there.

New drum harnesses
As reported in the last newsletter, we have started spending our Lotterywest money.
The first item to arrive is our new drum carriers, all the way from Scotland!
The Jim Kilpatrick Drum Carrier is a lightweight collapsible alternative to drum slings and other more cumbersome carrier designs. Smart design ensures that the drum may be attached to the harness at the preferred angle.
And, our older drummers like the mid section hinge that bends around their, um, mid sections.

Solo competitions this month
The 2009 state solo championships will be held at Murdoch University on the morning of Sunday 22nd March. In the afternoon, there will be a full band contest which will feature the return of the quickstep course, as an additional contest element.
The WA Branch will be putting on a sausage sizzle, so everyone would be welcome to go along and have a look at the other bands slugging it out around the quickstep course, and in the competition circle.

Ohio Drum Major banned for waving at Obama
A DRUM major who waved at President Barack Obama was brought to tears today over his six-month suspension from an Ohio marching band. "Six months is pretty harsh, I think," firefighter John Coleman told Newsnet 5.
But the Cleveland Firefighter's Memorial Pipes & Drums bandleader said even a glance is out of bounds for marching bands in a parade marking the inauguration of a president. "We had gone over and over time and again with everyone in the band that this was a military parade.
Protocol and proper decorum had to be followed at all times," bandleader Mike Engle told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "Unfortunately, John chose to ignore that."
Other bands complained about Mr Coleman's gesture, and the burly fire inspector - who has been in the band for 17 years - was told of his suspension on the bus home from Washington.
